Following guidance from potential funders, our insurers and the Angling Trust we have had to develop a new document that give guidance on the expected behaviours of members.
This new document "Safeguarding young people and adults, at risk" is to ensure that all persons with appropriate authorisation/membership can enjoy Angling on Mirehouse Ponds.
As a member of Haig Angling Club it is your responsibility to make yourself aware of this document and it's requirements.
Also added to the home page is the current terms of reference for senior officials of the Club, this is to be updated following the AGM on 6th March to identify all members of the Club committee.
Management of Bottom Pond
Since the bottom pond has been reformed and stocked there has been concerns that the carp present are not growing very well, and several requests made for restocking.
In order to verify the viability of restocking an assessment has to be made on existing stocks, as there are no records available associated with previous stockings, other than the 238lb (14 carp) stocked in January 2020 a netting took place on 6th February 2024 to help estimate the mixed species stocking levels, allow the removal of silver fish, freeing up capacity helping to determine what introduction can be made. This netting allowed over 600lb of silverfish to be removed and relocated. twenty eight carp were also caught see link on home page to pictures.
Management of top pond
In January 2023 we restocked the top pond at Mirehouse with 500 crucian carp over 6" and 500 tench from 4" to 6" from the Environment Agency's Calverton Fish Farm.

Then on 26th March 2023 we were able to secure additional stock bolstered with the aid of a grant from Cumbria Community Foundation (CCF). This grant allowed us to secure an order exceeding the limit for transport costs, securing additional tench.
Sport and Leisure Fisheries, Shifnal, Shropshire delivered 1065 6" - 8" F1 Hybrid Carp, 321 4" - 6" Crucian Carp and 317 6" - 8" tench. All young fish with the potential to grow and give good sport for a number of years to come.

Netting of the bottom pond 6th February 2024 produced over 900lb of fish which were caught sorted and graded, with 429lb of good silvers (roach to 1lb + and skimmers to 1.5lb) transferred to the top pond.
